Chapter Ten
Maggie drove home behind Bradley after their quick meal. The news about the death of the young man at the hardware store was enough to dampen their spirits beyond what a friendly bonfire could repair.
âThis is so weird, Mom,â he said to her after laying Wyatt in his crib for the night. âYou just saw that kid. And now he's dead.â
âHe seemed like a sweetheart, too,â Maggie said. âAt least, from my brief interaction with him.â
âI hope they figure this out soon,â he said. âI almost wish we could stay here longer to help keep an eye on you and the donut shop.â
Maggie smiled and reached out for her son's arm. âI'll be alright. And the two of you need to get on with your lives. You're a dad now, Bradley. You have Wyatt and your future to look out for. Besides, I have plenty of eyes on me here.â
âI've noticed,â he said with a chuckle. âEven so, I wish I could have been there when that guy put a knife to your throat.â
âI'm not sure it would have made a difference,â she said. âI'm alright. I wasn't hurt, just scared.â
âWhat time are you headed in tomorrow?â Bradley asked her before he went off to bed.
âProbably around seven,â Maggie said. âThatâs when Ruby plans to be there.â
âIâll play it by ear with Wyatt, but I will be by a little bit later in the morning,â he said.
Maggie left him and retired to her bed. Her sleep was interrupted several times by dreams of tall men sneaking into her bedroom, and the memory of a sharp blade against her neck.
The next morning, she waited for Ruby to show up before she opened her car door to get out. As much as Maggie wanted to play off the incident, she was slowly becoming aware that the intruder had stolen her peace, at least for the time being.
âIâm glad you didnât try to make it inside by yourself,â Ruby said when she joined Maggie in the alley. She carried a canvas grocery bag filled with ingredients for breakfast.
âAre you expecting a large crowd?â Maggie laughed at how big the bag was. They moved toward the back door. She slid the key in the lock and waited for a second before she pulled the door open.
âIâm going to set my bag down and the two of us are going to walk through this place together.â Maggie noticed the small pistol tucked into Rubyâs waistband for the first time.
âYouâre armed?â
Ruby nodded. âI am well-trained and have a permit for it,â she said. âAnd Brett knows that I planned to carry a firearm this morning.â
âOkay,â Maggie said. She set the bags containing the doorbell cameras down next to Rubyâs bag. âLetâs get this over with.â
Maggie reached inside and flipped on the lights, just as she had done before. This time, Ruby walked in front of her and checked every corner of the donut shop before she declared the space safe. âDoes it make you nervous?â she asked.
